Carrot

A Carrot is a vegetable you grow from Carrot seeds in a Garden Bed, or buy from Herm once his store reaches its second tier (he stocks 30 of each). You cannot eat a raw carrot. It goes into two dishes, 2 per batch: Vegetable soup in the oven and Vegetable salad at the Kitchen Table.

Herm also pays happiness for carrots at his second tier: every 15 you sell count as 1, up to 30 carrots a week.

Notes

  • At first a carrot bed only returns about as many seeds as you plant. Planting takes 4 seeds and needs Farming 4. The bed then grows in 12 steps, and every successful step adds a seed or a carrot, in turn. The 4 planting steps count as the first 4; the other 8 are rolled while the bed grows. Those rolls use the garden’s own growing skill, which starts at 2 against a carrot’s requirement of 4, so each succeeds half the time. On average a well-planted bed gives 4 carrots and 4 seeds, plus 2 Leaves.
  • Garden Upgrade I fixes that. It raises the garden’s growing skill to 4, so every step of a carrot bed succeeds: 6 carrots and 6 seeds from each well-planted bed. It comes with Garden Improvement I (30 green) and costs 10 Peat, 18 Bronze Nails and 9 Wooden Planks.
  • Peat helps before that. Fertilizers I gives every bed a fertilizer slot. A Peat put in it before the bed starts growing raises that bed’s growing skill by 1, so 3 steps in 4 succeed: about 5 carrots and 5 seeds.
  • Planting below Farming 4 costs you. Planting is scored with stars like cooking, so each planting step only has a chance to succeed, and a failed planting step is a failed growing step.
  • Studying one costs 3 Science and gives 30 green.
