Quests and the Story Tree
Most quests are finished by bringing something to a character and choosing the right answer in the conversation. Your current quests are listed in the Story Tree, a page of your character window that opens when you are first sent to find Herbert. The full list is on the Quests page.
Handing things over
An answer that finishes a quest shows what it needs next to it:
- An item with a price icon is taken from you.
- An item or number with a lock icon is only checked. You keep the item.
- Until you meet the condition the answer is greyed out with a red lock.
For example, Certificate, Please only asks you to show Herbert a burial certificate, so you can still sell it afterwards.
Items you hand over have to be in your backpack; the same item on your toolbar does not count. The opposite applies when a quest asks you to have something equipped, such as a tool or armour: then it has to be on your toolbar.
Finding the next step
- The marker over a character’s head means you can hand something in now. It only lights up once you meet the conditions, not merely because a quest is open.
- A character or object with something new to say shows its interaction prompt even when you are not looking for it. That prompt, not the marker, tells you where to go next.
- Many quests finish without a conversation: by walking into a place, finishing a craft, or sleeping. “Come back later” in this game usually means sleep in your bed.
A guard who keeps turning you back is not a bug: the way is closed until another quest moves on. The village gate stays shut until you give Herbert a burial certificate.
The Story Tree
Each box on the tree is one story step, but a box can hold a chain of quests. Only the first quest in the chain has a name; when you finish one, the next takes its place and the finished one is hidden.
Notes
- Do not sell items you may need to show. A quest that only checks an item still needs you to have it when you answer.
- First… Sludge? can be lost and fought again.
- In the demo, a few hand-in conversations are skipped. The quest still completes and the items are still taken.
