Reputation
Reputation is how much a character trusts you. Most important characters keep their own reputation with you. The people of the village share one village reputation: Januarius, Herm and the other villagers all read the same number. You can see it on a character’s portrait, as a number with a bar that fills at 100.
You earn reputation by finishing quests for that character, usually 10 at a time. Reputation is never spent: everything that asks for it only checks the number.
What reputation unlocks
Reputation technologies
Some nodes on the tech tree show a character’s portrait and a number instead of a price. You do not buy these. They unlock by themselves once your reputation with that character reaches the number, and the technologies behind them become available to buy.
There is a catch: the game only checks these nodes when you open the tech tree (or buy something in it). Reaching the number gives no message, and nothing changes until you next open the tree.
Quests
Some quests only let you continue once your reputation is high enough. The option shows a lock icon until you reach it. In the demo, the twins in Jack in a Boat and Good Fellow both need 10 village reputation.
Reputation in the demo
| Character | Quests that give it | Total | Tech it can unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Village | Planted and Delivered +5, Two Peas in a Pod +5 | 10 | — |
| Herbert, the Head of the Guards | Certificate, Please +10, Grave Expectations +10 | 20 | 20: opens Reinforced Plank and then Simple Barricades |
| Jack | Jack in a Boat +10 twice | 20 | 40 needed, not reachable in the demo |
Herbert’s two quests give exactly the 20 needed for his technology. Village reputation 10 can only come from those two village quests before the later story adds more, so do both to get past the twins and Good Fellow.
Notes
- Remember to open the tech tree. A reputation technology does not unlock until you look at the tree, and it tells you nothing when it does.
- Trading does not raise reputation, although Herm tells you it will. No part of the game adds reputation for buying or selling.
