Gunter
Gunter calls himself “the Mysterious Guntarius” and lives in the Astrologer’s Tower at the port, a tower attached to a giant stone foot. When you first walk in he looks as if he has seen a ghost: you remind him of an old friend. He sells the Comet’s Tail you need to summon the fairy, gives you three zombies, and becomes your PR manager, keeping the townsfolk calm about the undead working for you. Before all that he was a poet, and he still is one under a pen name.
Friendship Written in the Stars
Find him in his tower after you cross into the port (Friendship Written in the Stars). Three things to ask him about:
- The comet’s tail. He sells it, with a “guild discount” for a fellow astrologer. Chasing Fairy Lights needs it.
- Zombies. Albert’s zombies were his; he “borrowed” them, and he has three more for you in exchange for a small favour. He also sells the smelly Zombie goo that came with them.
- The favour. He left the Dockside Club without paying and his tarot cards are still there. Get them back from Linda, who wants the town’s old shop reopened first.
Bring him the Deck of Cards: 10 reputation, a Town Gratitude and a Story. With that reputation he hands over the zombies. He will not be seen leading zombies out of his tower, so he delivers them to your home by morning; walk out of your house to find them. When you next leave his tower, his store moves up to its second tier.
Congregation Trouble
His three zombies count toward your zombie limit. After your next sermon he whispers to you in the church: fewer people came, and he knows why. The guards on the wall watch zombies do your landscaping, and people are starting to panic. Before the prophecy business he was the best writer in the kingdom, so he offers to be your PR guy, “because Panic Reduction is what you need”. Talking to him in his tower moves his store up to its third tier.
- A hypno-device. Buy a Hypno-device from him (third tier), charge it with 1 Faith at a Formulation Bench (the quest unlocks the recipe) and give him the Charged hypno-device.
- A sermon. Hold your next one. Afterwards you get 10 reputation. The devices, he admits, don’t work very well on people, but paired with newspapers they help. He sets up the PR Machine by his house at the port and marks Gluttony day, the only day it can be used.
Poetry and a new frontman
- Rhyme and Printed. Build a Printing Press (the Newspaper technology) and print his poems: Printed Poetry, from a Blank Softcover Notebook, 2 Ink and a 3-star Story. The author on the cover is “Vagner”, his pen name. 10 reputation, a Town Gratitude and a Story. Then he drops you as the face of the campaign: you are “too controversial”. He wants Jack instead and gives you the PR Agreement to get signed.
- Stars, Lies, & Contracts. Jack signs only once his workshop is rebuilt and he has 60 reputation. Bring Gunter the Signed PR Agreement: 10 reputation and a Town Gratitude. He admits he has always craved attention and feared it at the same time, and hopes Jack will lend him some confidence.
- The Necronomicon. The donkey sends you to Gunter for the book. He is too busy with your PR at 20 reputation and finds it under his bed at 30: 10 reputation.
For the village election, Destiny Polls asks him to run the candidates’ campaign: 45 reputation to ask, 50 to convince him, which he agrees to when you mention Jack backing one of the twins. 50 is the cards, the hypno sermon, the poetry, the agreement and the Necronomicon: all five of his quests before the election.
The portal
When you come asking about the magic portal (Any Portal in a Storm, which starts with Larry), he panics: last time he was “just a side character” and still got into trouble. He sends you to the man who activated it, now a monk at the foundry under the bathhouse. The Bishop there has a magic mirror, and the mirror says the second fragment is Gunter’s.
The Hungry Cosmos: he gives you the Gluttony fragment (10 reputation), and the portal frame in his tower opens up; every fragment you find goes in there. He once had a third one, but sold it when he needed money, and it left on a merchant ship. The Trademaster at the Main Pier can get it back: come on Lust day, when the ship is in, with 1 gold. That is the Lust fragment; placing it in the portal gives Gunter another 10 reputation. He also asks you to wish the days of the week back into order: he is the only one who has noticed they are a mess.
Jack and Gunter
Why don’t you like me? sets a target for the PR campaign: 100 happiness. Happiness is capped by town quality, so the town has to reach 100 first. He only checks the number. 10 reputation. Poet, magical beast, astrologer, PR strategist: he says he liked being part of something big with friends better than any of it, and now he wants to help his friend Jack.
When Jack has also given up his fragment, the next morning I Love You, Man finds the two of them by the Main Pier, rebuilding the colossus. Offer Gunter a Small Printing Press for his poems and his colossus reports (steel anvil: 2 Engineering Details and 1 Steel Screws): 10 reputation and 3 Town Gratitude. Jack’s gift is a Prosthetic Hand; see his page.
For the portal, Gluttony and Pride asks Gunter and Jack together: 90 reputation with each if you returned the Old God’s eye, 100 if you kept it. Gunter’s last 10 come only from the dark path, from the Elegant Prosthetic Hand you bring Jack.
