Inventory and Bags

Your backpack starts with 20 slots. Above it is the toolbar, 14 slots for the tools, weapons and armor you have equipped, and beside it up to 4 items can be pinned to the hot bar for quick use. Bags are items that sit in one backpack slot and open into 9 or 16 slots of their own, for certain kinds of item only.

The toolbar

Equipping an item puts it on the toolbar, and only one item of each kind fits there: equip a second axe and the first goes back to your backpack. Everything on the toolbar adds its bonus to your mastery, so each branch can draw on two tools at most, for example an axe and a pickaxe for Building (see Mastery). In battle you cannot take off your sword, bow or armor.

Bags

A bag takes one backpack slot, so a 9-slot bag gains you 8 and a 16-slot bag 15. Each bag accepts only certain kinds of item, and bags never go inside bags. The game shows no description of what a bag takes; when you open one, the items in your backpack that cannot go in are greyed out.

How items find their way into bags:

  1. A new item goes first into a bag that already holds the same item, if it has room.
  2. Otherwise it goes into the backpack itself.
  3. Only when the backpack is full does it go into any bag that accepts it.

So a bag does not fill itself: put one of something in by hand, and from then on that item goes there first. An open bag also has a button that moves in every stack of an item it already holds.

What is in a bag counts as yours: quests, recipes, buildings and traders all see it, and food and potions in a bag can be used directly.

More room

Besides bags, the talent Deep Pockets adds 5 backpack slots.

Big items

Logs, stone blocks, marble, bodies and supply boxes are too big for the backpack. You carry them over your head, one at a time unless a talent lets you stack more; pick up another when you cannot carry more and the one you hold drops to the ground.

Notes

  • Destroying a bag destroys everything in it, and there is no confirmation. Empty it first.
  • You cannot throw anything on the ground. To get rid of an item, destroy it, put it in a chest or a workbench, sell it, or use it up.
  • Things lying on the ground never disappear, except bodies (see Corpses and organs). When your backpack is full, what you make or are given stays on the ground by you.
  • Bags cannot be sold back, and each shop stocks only one at a time; it restocks once the shopkeeper has saved enough money.
  • Different star grades of the same item never stack together.
