Talents and Inspirations
Inspirations are tracks that count what you do: trees felled, bodies buried, pockets picked, items studied. When a track reaches its goal you can buy that level, usually for Faith. Buying it gives talent experience in one of the five branches (see Mastery). Enough experience levels the branch up and gives you a talent point, which you spend on the branch’s talent tree.
Inspirations
- The count never resets. Each level’s goal is a running total, so one long session can complete several levels at once. You still buy them one level at a time.
- Most first levels are free; later levels cost Faith, which has to be in your backpack.
- Some inspirations are hidden until a technology, a quest or another inspiration unlocks them. Hidden inspirations still count, so they may be several levels ahead when they appear.
- Inspirations for church and graveyard quality only count new highs. Tearing something down and rebuilding it does not count twice.
Talent levels
| Talent level | Experience needed |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 3 |
| 3 | 4 |
| 4 and up | 5 each |
Almost every first level, and most later ones, give 1 experience, so your first talent point in a branch takes two inspiration levels from that branch.
Buying an inspiration can raise the branch one level at most. Experience beyond that is kept, but it only counts the next time you buy an inspiration in that branch.
Experience comes only from buying inspirations. Doing the work itself only moves the inspiration’s counter.
The talent tree
Every node costs 1 talent point. A node can be bought once all the nodes it hangs from are bought. The first node of each branch is “Branch mastery +1”, and every branch has five such mastery nodes; the rest give perks.
Opening the inspiration page
The inspiration page (and the talent tree with it) starts locked. It opens by itself once one branch has two completed, free inspiration levels waiting to be bought.
The earliest way is during your first burial: Last Respects completes when you bury one body, and Pickpocket when you pick one pocket at the autopsy table. Both are free, both are Anatomy, and together they give the 2 experience for your first Anatomy point.
Notes
- Pick a pocket before your first burial. That opens the inspiration page as early as possible and leads straight to Anatomy mastery +1, which you need before you can remove any organ.
- Every Surgeon’s Error counts toward Oops Surgeon. It is the one inspiration that rewards a botched autopsy.
- Unconfirmed: according to the game files, work done by zombies and by self-running workbenches also counts toward inspirations, because the game does not check who did it. This has not been checked in play.
- Holy Routine cannot be completed. Nothing in the current game adds to its count.
- Inspirations completed before the page opens give no message. Their counts are kept.
