Agatha
Agatha is the Nun. She arrives in the village after Jack has sailed off, and she is the one who gets the church working again. Her first quest opens the Theology tab of the technology tree and ends with your first sermon, which makes her the gateway to Faith. She lives at the Crossroads, near Herbert. Later she takes over your corpse supply, sends better corpses as you fix up her house, and ends up sharing that house with Herbert.
Holy Moly!
- Meet her in the tavern. After Jack’s letter, go to the Village Tavern. Talking to her gives you the Church Cleaning technology for free. She then leaves for the church.
- Church quality 10. The church starts full of rubble and broken pots, each worth −2, so its quality starts far below zero. Clear them and add furniture such as Interior Bench I (+3 each). Then tell her Everything’s ready. She gives you a Basic Prayer, a Town Gratitude and the Writing Basic technology.
- Your first sermon. Hold it at the lectern. This first one can be held the same day, whatever day of the week it is. Afterwards you get 10 reputation with her, another Town Gratitude, a Story and Priest’s Clothes, and Wrath day, the sermon day, is marked on the day indicator from then on.
The donkey’s strike
After you summon the fairy, the donkey stops bringing corpses. He says the Nun has ordered, in the name of the Church, that the dead stay with her for a while, and he calls her an awful woman who hates donkeys. While the strike lasts the corpses come from Agatha instead: on the donkey’s usual days she may leave one, by the same chances as his, and it does not go onto a Corpse Pallet.
The Nun with the Hairy Ass asks you to talk to her about it (10 reputation with her). She sees the donkey as an Emissary of Darkness from her visions and has two complaints:
- Your graveyard. Raise its quality to 20 and tell her. It is only checked.
- The donkey’s dirt on her holy ground. She wants the sacred well under the Crossroads working again. Repair the manhole in the passage beneath it with 2 Polished Bronze and 4 Polished Stone, then report: 10 reputation and 2 Town Gratitude.
When both are done, ask her about Corpse Delivery. She lets the donkey work again, and from then on you can ask her for a corpse count: No corpses, A few corpses or Lots of corpses. The question can only be asked on Wrath day (see Time and the Week). Tell the donkey he can come back, and he resumes his deliveries.
Lots of corpses makes the donkey bring up to two per visit. No corpses stops him and her both until you choose one of the other answers. Corpses has the numbers.
Better corpses
Once deliveries are back, Brawns and Brains lets you ask her for better corpses. She can pray harder over them before they go to you, but not while she lives like this.
| Step | She wants | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Ask about better corpses | 30 reputation | — |
| Fix up her place | 2 Wooden Kit I, 2 Stone Kit | 10 reputation, a Town Gratitude, a level of the Agatha’s Guest inspiration |
| Ask again | 40 reputation | Corpses of the second tier |
| Improve it further | 2 Furniture Kit I, 2 Building Kit I | Corpses of the third tier, a Town Gratitude, another level of Agatha’s Guest |
The fourth tier, the highest a quest gives, comes with The House at the Crossroads later on. Each tier sets the level; it does not add to it.
Better corpses give better certificates: a Burial Certificate II from the second tier and a III from the third. They also carry more skulls of both colours, so they are not simply easier to bury well.
The Nun Also Reads
Herbert cannot read and wants someone to read him a romance novel. When you ask Agatha for him in The Nun Also Reads (20 reputation), she refuses, unless you get a proper choir singing in your church. There are no decent singers left, she says; they are all dead.
- Build a Choir in the church. It comes from the Church Music I technology, which sits behind Church Carpets and her 30 reputation node.
- Tell her the choir is ready. She has vowed never to leave the Crossroads; as a priest you give her permission.
- Hold a sermon that uses the choir. Afterwards she agrees to read for Herbert. You get 10 reputation and 2 Town Gratitude, and Herbert’s next quest opens.
The organ and the house
After the election, Notorious Nun finds her worried about her reputation. Everyone fears her anger, and that is how she gets through the day, but Herbert is kind to her and she enjoys reading to him. She wants the church organ rebuilt, hoping its thunder will wake his righteous fury, and asks you to keep it a surprise. Just hearing her out gives 10 reputation. The organ needs special wood from the carvers in the Stilt Houses on the western lake, and the way there goes through Herbert’s lake battle.
- See You in Church. Raise the church quality to 50 and tell her: 10 reputation.
- The Organ. It comes from Church Music II (150 red, 100 blue tech points), behind Church Illumination and her 50 reputation node. The Special Wood is sold by Harold, the woodcarver, once you have repaired his machine. When it is built, tell Agatha and Herbert; each gives 3 Town Gratitude. Herbert asked you for the same organ, as a surprise for her.
- The House at the Crossroads. After the church and the organ, she asks for one more favour: a proper house, so that Herbert can leave his post and move in with her. Bring 2 Wooden Kit II and 2 Furniture Kit II. This sets the corpse tier to its highest and gives the last level of Agatha’s Guest. The Brawns and Brains upgrades have to be finished first.
With the house done and the organ reported to Herbert, A Good Example is the Best Sermon asks for a sermon that uses the organ, for the two of them. The music takes the anger out of Herbert, and her memories of her sisters become a gentle sadness. Both get 10 reputation, you get a Story and the achievement An Unlikely Pair, and after Herbert’s armour quest he moves in with her. The rest of their story (the two gifts, and their help with the portal) is on Herbert’s page.
Reputation
| Reputation | From | Opens |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Holy Moly! | The Nun with the Hairy Ass |
| 20 | + one of Nun of Your Business or the sacred well | The Nun Also Reads |
| 25 | Stone Gravestones I and Graveyard Decor I | |
| 30 | + the other one | Church Carpets (toward the Choir); asking for better corpses |
| 40 | + fixing up her place | Second-tier corpses |
| 50 | + the choir sermon | Church Illumination (toward the Organ) |
| 90 | + Notorious Nun, See You in Church, the organ sermon, the Trilogy you give Herbert | Helping with the portal (eye returned) |
| 100 | + the Comfortable Chair | Helping with the portal (eye kept) |
Her reputation rises only in steps of 10, so the 25 node opens at 30. The order in the middle of the table can vary; the totals cannot, because these ten quests are the only ones that give it.

Notes
- Visit the church before you report. The Everything’s ready answer stays hidden until you have walked out of the church once, even if its quality is already 10.
- Church quality only has to be 10 when you answer. It is checked, not spent.
- Nun of Your Business waits on the Writing Desk. She wants 5 Clean Paper and 2 Ink, and both recipes come with Writing Supplies (10 red, 5 blue), which needs the desk built first. Before the port no trader sells them, and the only paper lying around is a single sheet in the tower; in the town, the Alchemist stall sells both. The quest gives 10 reputation.
- Her reputation stops at 10 in the opening chapters. Her technologies need 25 for the stone gravestones, 30 for Church Carpets and 50 for Church Illumination.
- The corpse tier is set, not raised. Each of her upgrades sets the tier to a fixed value, and the sermon buff that gives better corpses adds one on top while it lasts.
- Her gifts are crossed with Herbert’s. The Trilogy you bring Herbert raises her reputation; the Speech Writing Device you bring her raises his.
