Cabbage
Cabbage comes in three grades, 1 to 3 stars. In the demo it has no recipe: you can eat it raw (4, 5 or 6 energy by grade), sell it to Herm for happiness, or study it. Herm sells plain Cabbage and Cabbage seed from his second tier.
For happiness the better grades are worth more to Herm: 15 plain Cabbages count as 1 happiness (up to 30 a week), 10 two-star ones as 1 (up to 20) and 5 three-star ones as 1 (up to 10). Each grade can bring in 2 happiness a week.
Growing it is hard in the demo. Planting plain Cabbage seeds needs Farming 8, and a cabbage bed’s growing steps succeed only 1 time in 4 (the garden’s growing skill starts at 2, against 8). A well-planted bed averages about 3 cabbages and 3 seeds for the 4 seeds planted; after Garden Upgrade I, which raises the growing skill to 4, about 4 and 4. Two-star seeds need Farming 10 and three-star seeds 12. How beds grow is explained on the Carrot page.
Plain seeds give plain cabbage. A bed only moves up a grade after its 10th successful step: the 11th adds a two-star seed and the 12th a two-star cabbage. With 8 steps at 1 in 4, or even 1 in 2, that rarely happens.
In the full game cabbage goes into sauerkraut, cabbage soup and sandwiches, and upgrading the town Vegetable Stand takes 40 two-star cabbages.
Studying it costs 2 Science for 40 green, whatever the grade.
