Walkthrough III: The Portal and the Red Eye
This part follows Walkthrough II. Leaving the election opens five threads at once, and this stretch has two goals. The first is the portal: it stands in the Astrologer’s Tower, needs seven fragments, and five of them are found here. The second is the Old God, who hides in a cheese cellar in the sewers and whose eye decides how the story ends. Along the way, the six people who must stand by the portal at the end each go from 60 to 80 reputation with you.
Town quality 100 gates two of the six people. Linda asks for it directly in Wealthy Clients, and Gunter asks for 100 happiness in Why don’t you like me?, which comes to the same thing because happiness can never exceed town quality. Town quality comes from building and upgrading the town’s shops, so keep doing that throughout this part.
After the election
| Quest | Who | What it asks | What it leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Cure for Wellness | Linda | Talk about Albert’s cough | The western floodgate, Wealthy Clients, and a ship’s captain and seven refugees at the port |
| Notorious Nun | Agatha | Talk: 10 reputation | The battle at the lake, Herbert’s armour, and church quality 50 |
| Goddess in the Swamp | Jully | 100 Faith for the ritual | The search for the Old God |
| Front-of-the-Envelope Calculation | Jack | Talk, at 60 reputation | The water tunnel to the Royal Foundry, through the western and eastern floodgates |
| Press for Cash | The twins, Januarius | 20 Printed Money | A Mysterious Chest, 3 Town Gratitude, Januarius’s third shop tier |
Printed Money comes from the Printing Press, 10 bills from 10 Clean Paper and 1 Paint, so Press for Cash takes two runs. Januarius stamps 10 of the 20 and sends you to the twins with them.
North of the river
Herbert plans four more pushes into the infected part of the town. Talk to him in the Barracks to open each camp. All of them except the bathhouse basement can only be started on Sloth day.
| Battle | Squads | Defence | Opened by | Winning it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Closing the Western Floodgate | 3 | 56 | A Cure for Wellness or the water tunnel | Drains the canal. Opens the next two, depending on which of those two you have done |
| Closing the Eastern Floodgate, Parts I and II back to back | 3 | 80 | The western floodgate and the water tunnel | Opens the bathhouse basement. Davy’s orders now let you pick the colour of tech books |
| Break Through to the Bathhouse Basement | 3 | 96 | The eastern floodgate. Any day of the week | The Royal Foundry and the Bishop |
| Operation POTATO, Parts I and II | 3 | 72 | The western floodgate and A Cure for Wellness | Refugees settle the Sluice Area, and its teleport stone opens |
| Battle at the Lake | 3 | 64 | Still Standing on Stilts, from Notorious Nun | The Stilt Houses, Harold the woodcarver, and their teleport stone |
See The North of the Town for the places these open.
The Royal Foundry
Under the bathhouse, the Bishop and three monks run the Royal Foundry. He can help with two things:
- Steel (Man of Steel). Ask him and he starts selling Steel Ingots in conversation, 1 silver each. Bring 3 to Jack (Man of Steel): 10 reputation with Jack. Then Jack wants to see your factory (Factory Tour). It needs the factory’s number to reach 20, which means at least 20 belt cells running on at least 20 power (see The Factory): 10 more, bringing Jack to 80.
- The portal (Magic Mirror), if you have already asked Gunter about it. The Bishop’s magic mirror points to the fragments. The first, Sloth, is “right behind you”: the Bishop has it and wants 3 Zombie Power. That is made in the factory by a Bioreactor, 5 wheat each, from the Bioreactor technology.
A monk also asks for 2 three-star Wine (The Lord’s Vintage). He talks about offering you a sword instead, but the quest only gives 3 Town Gratitude.
Five portal fragments
Ask Larry about the portal, then Gunter (Any Portal in a Storm). Every fragment goes into the portal in the Astrologer’s Tower. Each one you place is gone from your bag, and each gives you a Story.
| # | Fragment | Where it comes from | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sloth | The Bishop, for 3 Zombie Power | After the Royal Foundry and asking Gunter |
| 2 | Gluttony | Gunter kept one (The Hungry Cosmos) | Same time. This also opens the portal in his tower |
| 3 | Lust | Gunter sold it. Buy it back from the Trademaster at the Main Pier (High Price): 1 gold, on Lust day only | After Gluttony |
| 4 | Envy | Debris in the Sluice Area (Green Fragment) | After Lust is placed, and Operation POTATO won |
| 5 | Pride | Jack (More Portal Parts): he talks at 60 reputation and gives it up at 80 | After Lust is placed |
Placing Lust gives Gunter 10 reputation, opens the Envy and Pride quests, and starts Gunter’s last favour, Why don’t you like me?: come to him with 100 happiness, for 10 more. With Jack’s Pride at 80, that puts both of them at 80, and the next time you sleep, Jack and Gunter want to see you at the Main Pier. That visit is where the ending starts.
Once the first five are in, the last two are the business of the final part.
Albert’s cough
Linda is worried about Albert’s cough. Three quests, in any order, bring the two of them to 80:
- Wealthy Clients: town quality 100, then report to Linda. 10 with Linda.
- Coughing it Up!: ask Albert about his health. It opens with the search for the Old God, below. 10 with Albert.
- The potato. After Operation POTATO, the refugees want land in the Sluice Area (Green Men From Far Lands), then 3 Steel Shovels. They pay you with 3 Po-ta-to. Give all three to Linda (Hot Potato Delivery, 10), then tell Albert (Heal the Healer, 10).
Those three potatoes are the only ones. Nothing sells them and nothing grows them, so do not eat or sell them.
The organ
Agatha’s and Herbert’s last favours before the ending centre on an organ for the church.
- See You in Church. Church quality 50, then talk to Agatha: 10.
- Special Wood. After the Battle at the Lake, find Harold in the Stilt Houses (Organic Music). His machine for catching timber is broken: bring him 2 Building Kits I and 1 Iron Kit II, and he starts selling Special Wood, 1 silver each. Nobody else sells it, and the ending needs it too.
- Build the Organ from Church Music II: 4 Special Wood and 6 Steel Details. The technology hangs from Church Illumination, which needs 50 reputation with Agatha. Tell Agatha and Herbert (3 Town Gratitude each).
- The House at the Crossroads. Once the church is at 50 and the organ is built, Agatha has a delicate matter: her house. If you have also done her second body upgrade in Brawns and Brains, bring 2 Wooden Kits II and 2 Furniture Kits II. Your bodies get their third tier.
- A Good Example is the Best Sermon. Hold a sermon that uses the organ: 10 each with Agatha and Herbert, and the achievement An Unlikely Pair.
- Not in Shining Armor Yet. 5 Steel Armor for Herbert’s guards: 10 with Herbert.
With the organ sermon and the armour both done, the next time you sleep Agatha and Herbert want a visit at her house. That is their part of the ending.
Finding the Old God
- Goddess in the Swamp. Give Jully 100 Faith. He holds the ritual at the Heart of the Swamp; talk to the Goddess before you leave. She gives you a three-star Story and tells you her brother is hiding in a cheese cellar in the sewers.
- Finding Old God. At the Dockside Club, Linda tells you Davy the Dagger is by the sewer entrance at the west gate. He wants the same cellar, for its cheese: help his men get in and half of it is yours. He gives you 2 Cheese, and the town’s sewer entrance opens if you have won Sewer Brawl I.
- Go down into the sewers and talk to his men. They are at the cellar wall, but there is no door, and explosives would bring the street down.
- Dig. Once you have been in the sewers and placed the Lust fragment, the next time you sleep a stranger called Dig is in your house. He gives you the Old God’s Red Eye.
- Friend or Foe. Show the eye at the cellar wall and a door appears. The Old God is inside.
The choice
Ask the Old God everything. He explains the portal: it needs all seven fragments, and six people, one for each day of the week, who must stand by it and trust you completely. With his eye back, ninety percent is enough. Then you choose:
| Give the eye | Keep the red eye | |
|---|---|---|
| How to pick it | Available straight away | Only appears after you have asked him all seven of his questions |
| Next quest | Eye, Red Eye: hold a sermon with his prayer, which he gives you | Build him an attic at home (Fix the Attic); he moves in |
| Reputation each of the six needs | 90 | 100 |
| Extra work for the last 10 | None | Three hidden blue talents, three dark dreams and three more gifts (see the next part) |
| Can you change your mind? | No | Yes: he keeps offering to take the eye back until the final battle appears on the map |
Both paths end at the same portal and the same final choice. Giving the eye back is the shorter one. Walkthrough IV covers both, and the Old God page has the story.
Notes
- Town quality 100 is a gate for both Linda and Gunter. Gunter asks for 100 happiness, and happiness cannot go above town quality.
- The Lust fragment costs 1 gold and can only be bought on Lust day. The Envy and Pride fragments do not appear until Lust is in the portal.
- Jack needs 80 for his fragment. Steel and the factory tour are what take him from 60 to 80.
- Special Wood only comes from Harold. The organ, Jack’s prosthetic hand and both dark-path crafts need it, so the Battle at the Lake cannot be skipped.
- Keep the three potatoes. They are the only ones in the game, and Linda wants all three.
- The bathhouse basement battle can be fought on any day. The other battles in this part wait for Sloth day.
- “Keep the red eye” is hidden until you have asked the Old God all seven questions. If you only see “Give the eye”, keep asking.
