Iron Ore

Iron Ore can be mined long before it can be used. An iron ore rock takes two breaks with a pickaxe: the first gives 3 ore and leaves a smaller rock that gives 3 more, so each rock is worth 6 (8 with the Miner perk). Both breaks need Smithing mastery 3. Two such rocks stand just outside the graveyard. Unlike the copper vein, they do not grow back.

The rocks run out; for a steady supply there are two ways. The Trademaster sells 10 at a time, and a zombie at the Zombie Miner in the Old Mine brings out 1 ore and 2 Coal a round, without end. The Quarry has three more rocks, 15 ore in all.

Smelting it into Iron Ingots needs Furnace II, which comes with Iron Forge (35 red); later the Factory’s Smithy I also smelts one ore with a Coal. Until then nothing iron can be made: no Iron Details, no iron tools, no iron nails.
