The Quarry

The Quarry lies just south of the yard of your house, where the forest begins. Its rock face and marble face never run out: each is whole again the moment you break it, so this is where Stone stops being a limited supply. The collapsed cave at its back is the surface entrance to the Old Mine, and its build desk is where zombie quarrying goes.

What you can gather

What Needs Each break gives Comes back
Rock face Pickaxe, Building 4 4 Stone At once
Marble face Pickaxe, Building 7 4 Marble, 2 red tech points At once
Two rocks Pickaxe, Building 2 and 4 2 and 4 Stone, 2 red tech points No
Three iron ore rocks Pickaxe, Smithing 3 3 Iron Ore, 3 red tech points No; 15 ore in all
A barberry bush Bare hands, Farming 1 2 to 4 Berries After about 20 minutes

The rock face is what lifts the Stone limit of the early game: the loose rocks around your house hold 79 Stone between them and never come back (see Mason). It gives no tech points, though, and does not count toward Rock Breaker; only the loose rocks do. The marble face does count toward Marble Breaker and gives 2 red tech points every time.

Building 4 is more than the rusty axe and pickaxe give together (2), and Building 7 more than the bronze pair (4). See Mastery for the other ways to raise it.

The cave

The cave at the back is sealed, and a sign by it reads “Explosive traps inside. Do not enter. Hans”. Until you have met Hans at the Bandit Camp (Forest Pass), all you can do here is read the sign. After that meeting the rubble can be cleared with 1 Dynamite, by hand, with Building mastery 8. The bandits give you a stick later in the same story (Can’t See The Forest for the Iron), or you can make your own at the Formulation Bench.

Blowing it open opens the Old Mine’s entrance from this side, and the way out of the mine that was blocked. If you have also cleared the rubble in the passage from the Factory under your house to the mine, the six zombie gathering technologies appear on the tree; you still buy them.

Zombie quarrying

The build desk here offers a Zombie Stone Quarry and a Zombie Marble Quarry, each built from 2 Pieces of stone and 4 Wooden Planks. Each sets up two spots where a zombie with a pickaxe works: it brings up 1 Stone or 1 Marble per shift and puts it straight into a chest in the Quarry, so build one there. A Porter Station (2 Pieces of stone and 4 Bricks) carries both to the Factory.

The stone quarry comes with Zombie Stone Mining (70 red, 10 blue), the marble one with Zombie Marble Mining (120 red, 30 blue). Both are among the technologies hidden until the cave and the mine passage are open.

Notes

  • When you can first walk in is not confirmed. The Quarry sits right against the south side of your yard, but the story only sends you here after the forest guards let you through, and the game files do not show whether the way from the yard is open before that.
  • A quarry zombie needs Building mastery 2 for stone and 4 for marble, or it stands still without any message. New zombies have no talents, so that means at least a Bronze Pickaxe for stone and an Iron Pickaxe for marble, unless it has learned Building upgrades. Past Bronze, an Iron or Steel Pickaxe makes stone several times faster; for marble the Iron Pickaxe is slightly faster than Steel (worked out from the game files, not timed in play).
  • The Quarry teleport stone stands at the southern edge, where the forest starts. It costs 6 Faith, the second-highest price of any milestone.
