The Graveyard

The graveyard lies east of your house, in front of the ruined temple that becomes your church; the church door is in the graveyard. You bury your first body here during the introduction, and the graveyard’s quality is what Herbert checks in Grave Expectations. How burial and quality work is explained on the Graveyard mechanics page; this page covers the place itself.

At the start

One Grave Area I is already built, and it cannot be removed. Only what stands inside a Grave Area counts toward graveyard quality. The chest holds the tools for your first burial: a Rusty Shovel, a Rusty Hammer, three Wooden Signs and a piece of Cheese.

The teleport stone just west of the graveyard costs 1 Faith to activate. See Milestones.

The build desk

The graveyard’s build desk offers Empty Graves, Grave Areas (two at most), Exterior Bench I for the bench spots of a Grave Area, chests, and the graveyard expansions.

Expanding the graveyard

Three expansions each clear another plot of weeds in the graveyard grounds and open it for building:

Expansion Cost
Expand graveyard I 12 Pieces of stone
Expand graveyard II 12 Polished Stone
Expand graveyard III 24 Polished Stone

The first becomes available after Certificate, Please; each one unlocks the next. Polished Stone is made at the Stonemason’s Workbench after the Stone Polishing technology. Every expansion counts toward the inspiration Cemetery Expander.

Notes

  • Bodies can go in the river, at two fixed spots: one west of your house and one east of the graveyard, toward the Crossroads. It gives nothing at all, not even the certificate. See Graveyard.
  • More Wooden Signs are made, not found. After your first burial the story gives you the technology for them; the three in the chest are just a head start.
  • Unconfirmed: the second Grave Area probably needs an expansion first. According to the game files, each expansion opens one more building plot, and the plot you start with is taken by the first Grave Area. This has not been checked in play.
