Grave Area I

Already in place in Graveyard, so you do not need to build it.

A Grave Area I is a piece of graveyard with 6 grave spots and 1 bench spot. Graveyard quality only counts what stands inside a graveyard area like this one, and an Empty Grave can only be placed on a grave spot, so every body you bury needs one. One is already built when you arrive. The technology Graveyard Keeper I, which lets you build more, is given to you free when you put the sign on your first grave in the introduction.

How areas work

  1. You place it from the graveyard’s build desk. It costs nothing, and it goes on one of the graveyard’s building plots. Trees, bushes, stones and stumps do not stop you placing it.
  2. It marks out its spots. Each spot takes one kind of thing: graves, benches, monuments, flower beds, lanterns, or columbaria and crypts.
  3. Everything inside it counts toward graveyard quality: each grave’s own quality, each decoration’s quality, and −3 for any open pit or unfilled grave. The area itself adds nothing.

Kinds of area

Area Technology Graves Benches Monuments Flower beds Lanterns Columbaria
Grave Area I Graveyard Keeper I 6 1
Grave Area II Graveyard Keeper II 6 1
Grave Area III Graveyard Keeper III 4 1 2
Grave Area IV Graveyard Keeper IV 4 1 2
Walkway Area I Graveyard Decor I 2 1 2 2
Walkway Area II none found 2 1 2 2
Columbarium Area I Columbariums I 2 2 1 2
Columbarium Area II Columbariums II 1 2 1 2
Mixed Area I Mixed Graveyard I 4 2 1
Mixed Area II Mixed Graveyard II 4 2 1
Mixed Area III Mixed Graveyard III 4 2 1

What goes on each spot: benches take Exterior Benches (3, 5 or 7 quality), monument spots take Monuments (2, 4 or 6), flower spots take Flower Beds (2, 4 or 6), lantern spots take Lanterns (2 or 5), and columbarium spots take a Columbarium (12 or 20) or a Crypt (10). A grave scores up to 14 with the best headstone and fence, but never more than its body’s white skulls (see Graveyard).

Notes

  • You can build at most two of each kind of area. The Grave Area you start with counts as one of your two Grave Area I.
  • An area cannot be taken down while anything is built on it, even an empty pit. The one you start with cannot be removed at all until you have put the sign on your first grave.
  • A burial makes an area permanent. A filled grave can never be removed, so the area around it cannot be taken down either. Decide where each kind of area goes before you bury anyone in it.
  • Clear the plot as well. Anything left standing inside the area counts, and the trees, bushes, stones and stumps in the graveyard all have negative quality.
  • Unconfirmed: your first new area probably needs Expand graveyard I. The area you start with fills the plot you begin with, and each expansion opens one more plot. This follows from the game’s files and has not been checked in play.
  • Grave Areas I and II hold the most graves, 6 each. Later areas trade graves for decoration spots, and Walkway and Columbarium Areas have no grave spots at all.
