Soul

Soul is the fairy who wakes you in the Inquisition dungeon at the very start and tells you it is your destiny to save the world. She serves the Goddess of Nature in the swamp. She has no shop, no reputation and no place of her own: you only see her in cutscenes, and between them there is nobody to talk to. What she asks of you is to summon her, and the recipe for that has to be pieced together from Jully, Albert and Gunter.

The dungeon

You wake up in chains. Soul bites you awake, tells you it took you eight years to ruin this world, and makes you promise to save it. She breaks the first chain, but there is “not enough faith left in the world” for the second. “Summon me as soon as you can”, she says, and vanishes. Larry, in the sarcophagus next to you, has watched the whole thing, and you break the second chain yourself.

Summoning her

Nobody in the town knows how to summon a fairy, and finding out takes most of the opening:

  1. Jully, the Head of the Village, knows “matters of nature”, but will not tell you until you have helped the village: village reputation 10. Then he says you need teeth (a dead man’s will do) and Dream Dust, which only the Plague Doctor can make. See Januarius: Jully is Januarius in a mask.
  2. Albert, the Plague Doctor, lives under your house. He teaches you to make Dream Dust and names the last ingredient: a Comet’s Tail, which the astrologer in the port sells.
  3. Gunter, the astrologer, sells the Comet’s Tail. The port opens only after the first battle, so this is where the opening’s summoning quest waits.

Then craft the summoning at the Kitchen Table (Chasing Fairy Lights): 1 Dream Dust, 1 Comet’s Tail and 1 Tooth. It needs Farming mastery 3, and it can only be made once. You get the achievement A Little Magic.

What she tells you

Soul sneezes, asks what took you so long (“Doing side quests?”) and eyes Larry with suspicion. Then she explains why the world is falling apart: the Ancient God split your soul. While one half of you was dragged to the dungeon and tortured, the other half, which she calls the Evil Keeper, was out destroying what was left. He sold burgers made from corpses, created the first zombie, used the magic portal for his own gain, and destroyed the portal, “the very core of the world”. You have to defeat your evil half, restore the portal, and go to the temple of the Goddess of Nature in the swamp for guidance.

When you admit that zombies are working around your house, she guesses the donkey knows how to raise them, and says the strong ones need the shiny crystals that grow at the Goddess’s temple to keep the Ancient God’s magic out. Those are the Blue Crystals of the swamp.

She leaves you the Fairy’s Swamp Map, and says she will wait for you in the swamp. The summoning also starts two other things:

The Goddess of Nature

Once over the bridge, walk on into the swamp and Soul finds you (Heart of the Swamp). Her lady grows weaker every day, she says, and she asks whether you have brought “that traitor”, Larry, who has betrayed them twice. You have not: he stayed at home. She leads you to the statue at the Heart of the Swamp, and the Goddess wakes and sends you after her brother, the Old God, and the portal. What the Goddess says is on the swamp’s page.

Jully’s ritual

After the village election you bring Jully to the swamp for his ritual (Goddess in the Swamp). Soul is not impressed with him (“Worshipers sure aren’t what they used to be…”), but the ritual works. Then she takes him aside on “a rather delicate matter”: she still owes him some coins for his teeth. The Goddess, stronger for his Faith, tells you where to look for her brother.

The end

When the last fragment is in the portal, Soul appears once more: “You fixed it! You did it! The world is saved!” She warns everyone not to break it again, or she will find them and bite them, and says goodbye before the wishes are made. See the ending.

Quests

Notes

  • Farming mastery 3 comes before the summoning. The three ingredients are not enough on their own: the Kitchen Table only makes it once your Farming mastery reaches 3.
  • Summon her early. The swamp, the Goddess, the election and the donkey’s strike all wait for the summoning, and nothing else starts them.
  • Only one summoning. The recipe is a one-time craft, so there is no second copy of the Fairy’s Swamp Map; keep it until the bandits take it.
